(Image/Jeff Smith) It’s not necessary up purchase a dial-back chronology light just to read the advance on choose. Quicken aforementioned engine, and twist aforementioned dial until the timing marker lines up with the zero mark on the tab. Let’s say the engine requires 15 degrees of initial timing at idle. Using this method, you could plot the entire timing curve of your distributor by reading the actual timing as, oh say, every 100 RPMs. (Image/Jeff Smith) Traditonal dial-back lights secondhand a simplicity dial on the back of the light. Dial-back lights operate according delaying the light flash by the your of degrees view by the dial or upon the numeral displays. If you sprung for a really good light, some have a dial that lets you dial the flash to bring the marks back to TDC and you can read the amount of advance on the dial. You would then adjust the timing **** on the dial back light until the mark for the timing wheel aligns with the 0 degree mark and read the actual timing off of the **** of the dial back. Start the engine and see where your timing is. On the other hand, if you want to check the timing at a given RPM, you just run the engine up to that RPM and shine the light on the timing mark. They way I understand it, you can set your rpm anywhere you wish and 'dial back' the timing mark to zero using the knob on the timing light (by 'dial back', I mean watching the timing mark on balancer while your engine is running and adjusting the knob to bring back the timing mark to zero degrees). You would then loosen up the distributor and turn it a little to get the mark to align on the 0 degrees mark. If your advance is more or less than 36 degrees, the timing mark will be to one side or the other of the 0 degree mark. Some inductive timing lights are sensitive to polarity, for that reason some are marked with an arrow and 'Toward Plug -> ' and some are not, but most are polarity sensitive. When the distributor timing is at 36 degrees, the timing mark will align with the 0 degree mark on the timing wheel. If you want to set your centrifical timing to 36 degrees, you disconnect and plug the distributor vacuum line, start the car, dial the light to 36 degrees, and shine it at the timing mark. Push the advance button on an dial-back light (or turn the dial) until the zero mark on the balancer linens up with the zero mark on the timing tabbed. JohnAs noted, there are degree values printed on the light/**** that selects the timing value from 0 degrees to 60 degrees on the Craftsman. Timing Light, Advance Dial, Adjusts 0 to 60 Degrees, Xenon Bulb, Inductive Pickup, Detachable Leads, Each See More Specifications. Call me uninformed! In layman terms what is dial-back?
